A Journey into History: Children from Nea Kavala Camp Visit the Royal Tombs of Aigai Thanks to Boustany Foundation Support

On February 1st, 2025, Open Cultural Center (OCC) Greece, with the valued support of the Boustany Foundation, organized an unforgettable educational visit for 28 children from the Nea Kavala refugee camp. The group, made up of boys and girls aged 9 to 16 and representing nationalities including Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Kuwait, explored the ancient Royal Tombs of Aigai in Vergina—a unique opportunity to connect with Greek history and culture.

The excursion, which began with a scenic bus journey from Polykastro to Vergina, offered the young participants a chance to step outside their everyday surroundings and immerse themselves in an enriching learning experience. Upon arrival, the group visited the underground museum built to preserve the tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. There, the children marveled at the historical artifacts, murals, and treasures, and listened attentively to explanations from a local tour guide.

To make the experience inclusive and accessible, OCC’s dedicated team of volunteers provided real-time interpretation in Farsi, Dari, Arabic, and Kurmanji, ensuring that every child could fully understand and engage with the tour. Their curiosity and excitement were evident, as they asked questions and reflected on the history shared—particularly a moment when they learned about Roxana, Alexander the Great’s wife, who came from a region that is today Afghanistan.

After the museum tour, the group enjoyed lunch together, sharing sandwiches, juice, and chocolate, before returning to the camp with new knowledge and joyful memories.

With 54% female participation and enthusiastic feedback from the students, this initiative highlighted the power of educational excursions in fostering cultural awareness and inclusion. As one student, Lin (15), shared: “It was a different and unique experience. The smaller kids also had a lot of fun.”

This inspiring day was made possible by the generosity of the Boustany Foundation. OCC Greece extends its heartfelt thanks for helping provide these children with a meaningful day of discovery, connection, and inspiration.
